Job 3# Literature Connections - Compare and Contrast

It was neat to compare these two authors, as they are both very similar and different. Personally I didn't really like Legend of Sleepy Hollow very much compared to Occurrence at Owl Creek bridge, reason being the writing style. The most note worthy feature in Legend of Sleepy hollow was the dramatic, visionary way of writing. Nothing seemed realistic. From the description of scenery to the character qualities that were described, The whole feeling of the story was very whimsical and mysterious. I think this was most likely because the trend of writing at that time was more romantic. The culture at that time was more feel good and jolly.
In contrast, Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge was very descriptive, but realistic, which is my type of writing. The descriptions of his thoughts before and after the attempted execution were so relatable. Even though I've obviously never been in the situation he was in (shocker, I know) it made so much sense what he was feeling. It didn't have any romantic fluff and was just so real and incredibly well written. This writing might have been more popular because of the war going on. People had more of an interest in serious and real writings because there was a more serious and solemn vibe in the air with the hardships of life during war.

Job 2# Thinking Question

"The power of thought was restored; he knew that the rope had broken and he had fallen into the stream."

My question is, why did the rope break? It is very surprising to me that with such a formal, well thought out way of executing him, it end with, of all things, the rope breaking. An epic fail on the part of the executioners. Was there a mistake that was made on their end? Or did the man cause this to happen some how? Or maybe an outsider rigged it in order to enable the man for a better chance of escape?

Job 1 # Line Illuminator

"He was not conscious of an effort, but a sharp pain in his wrist apprised him that he was trying to free his hands. He gave the struggle his attention, as an idler might observe the feat of a juggler, without interest in the outcome. What splendid effort!--what magnificent, what superhuman strength! Ah, that was a fine endeavor! Bravo! The cord fell away; his arms parted and floated upward, the hands dimly seen on each side in the growing light."    Chapter 3

I've always thought it is so interesting how, when humans are in these high stress situations of emergency, our sympathetic nervous system kicks on. We are given that ability to do things we didn't know we could & strength we didn't know we had, because of the crucial circumstances. Usually these sort of actions would be conscious actions, but during life threatening circumstances these actions become automatic.
For example, when he was trying to free his hands, he was not aware that he was doing this, which is very similar to involuntary actions of the body, such as breathing or blinking your eyes. This man's conscious mind is so traumatized, frightened and in shock that the fight or flight response takes over in order to do what it can to keep him alive.
